Grows naturally in apine grasslands, marshlands near rivers and lakes, wet meadows, bogs; 2000-5400 m. Gansu, Qinghai, W Sichuan, Xizang, NW Yunnan.
I grow it under somewhat drier conditions than what is described above. Monocarpic, but self seeds in my garden. I've heard there are perennial clones that make side rosettes.
